Change Happens!
Ronald Reagan was inaugurated as the 40th President in Jan 1981. Two months later he became the first serving U.S. President to survive being shot in an assassination attempt. Reagan believed that God had spared his life so that he might go on to fulfill
a greater purpose.
Two years later in January 1983 Reagan’s approval rating had dropped to an all time low of 35%. By Nov 1984 things had turned around and Reagan carried 49 of the 50 states, becoming only the second presidential candidate to do so, and the eldest to be elected President in history.
By Reagan’s 2nd term the Reagan Cabinet had changed dramatically. During Reagan’s 8 years as President, he had 2 Secretaries of State, 3 Secretaries of the Treasury, 3 Attorney Generals, 3 Secretaries of the Interior, 2 Secretaries of Agriculture, 2 Secretaries of Commerce, 3 Secretaries of Labor, 3 Secretaries of Health and Human Services, 3 Secretaries of Transportation, 3 Secretaries of Energy and 3 Secretaries of Education. ref: http://www.u-s-history.com/pages/h1407.html
Throughout all the challenges of the cold war era and changes in the administration Reagan stood his course and did what was needed. By May of 1986 Reagan’s poularity was up to 68%. Reagan changed the world with one speech at the Berlin Wall in June 1987. Some in the Cabinet wanted to remove “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” from that speech. The rest is history! The USA and The World rallied around Reagan, his words and mission. In 1989 the gates were opened in Berlin and the Berlin Wall was torn down.
